Groups and Clubs

bible study Bible Study Group

This very active group welcomes all, and encourages folks to enrich their faith and spiritual journey in this ever-changing world. Books, theologians, visual aids and bible studies all bring a better understanding of our faith. Questions, doubts, different points of view, and social gatherings define our time together. Call or email the minister for more information.

St. John's Book Club

It’s a “group of characters” who enjoy discussing a “group of characters”. If you like to read a wide variety of books on every topic imaginable, then this is the club for you. The St. John’s Book Club meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month from September to June (except for December) in Room 15 of the Maritime Conservatory.

A thoroughly democratic book club! At our final meeting in June, each of our members presents options of books for the group and we vote with our dots. The books that get the most dots are chosen for the following year.

See our reading list for this year.

United Church Women

The Women's Association and the Women's Missionary Society joined together to form the United Church Women in 1962.

At the present time, St John's United UCW has two units, The Gilchrist Unit and The Mary Todd Unit, who meet in members' homes once or twice a month. Five times a year, some of the members meet for a devotional time and a business meeting, followed by refreshments and social time.

Our UCW used to hold two fundraising projects each year, but due to the increasing ages of our members, we now limit our services to serving refreshments at receptions following funerals held in the church. We also help out at any fundraising projects that St. John's United Church holds.

Our members take an active part in the life of St. John's United as members of Session, Board of Trustees,Committee of Stewards, Membership Committee, Senior Choir, Bell Choir and Official Board. UCW Members are also very active in the Community. As far as we know, St. John's United UCW is the oldest Women's Group in Halifax Presbytery.

The purpose of the United Church Women is to unite the women of the congregation for the total Mission of the Church and to provide a medium through which they can express their loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian Witness, Study, Fellowship and Service.
